202204281117 - Success is the intersection of discipline and habit

  • Achievements create happiness, I can relate to that given that I had not a professional but some sort of a sportive adolescence.
  • What is oftentimes confused is that life achievements are the results of endless discipline - working out, studying, etc. Gary Keller provides a different view on this matter. Success starts where we build habits off a short term discipline1.
  • This reminded me of Arnold Schwarzenegger answering why at age 75 he still goes to the gym?2 His answer: "For the same reason as why I had breakfast yesterday. [...] Training is part of my life. Nothing will ever change. Until I die I will be working out". This illustrates well how being disciplined initially turned into a routine.
  • When we say people are disciplined what we actually mean is that people have built out a set of habits that help them achieve their goals in life.
